Olivia’s Story
“I won’t enter a relationship because I refuse to be treated as an adult dependent when I am an independent woman.
I’ve shared this with people on casual dates, and their reactions are almost always the same: sadness. My disability isn’t visible, so many people assume I’m simply being stubborn. But I’m not.
I refuse to put someone I care about in a position where they could become financially responsible for me simply because we choose to be together. No one should have to carry that burden, and I shouldn’t have to sacrifice my financial independence just to experience love and companionship.”
Unfortunately this experience isn’t unique to Olivia. It’s the stark reality for many people receiving the Disability Support Pension. Like everyone else, we’re simply trying to find our person, build meaningful relationships, and create a life together. We shouldn’t have to choose between love and financial independence.
